چکیده

Abstract This work focuses on the carbonate factories constituting Pietra di Finale Fm cropping out in Ligurian Alps. unit constituted a mixed carbonate–siliciclastic coastal wedge developed during Middle Miocene. The characterizing of clearly differ from those systems and platforms developing Miocene elsewhere Mediterranean area. Here, Alps, euphotic factory does not show any evidence seagrass meadows coral bioconstructions. Zooxanthellate corals are present only as skeletal debris associated with abundant stylasterids. In mesophotic oligophotic zones, typical biota red algae larger benthic foraminifers strongly reduced. shows an unusual abundance stylasterids, classically interpreted deep-water biota. However, this example, absence low-energy textures other components suggest shallow-water origin, probably eu- or zone. stylasterids colonized hard substrates available were successively removed resedimented to form fraction Finale. is restricted particular limited situations Mediterranean, thus suggesting that their abnormal development controlled by local rather than global factors.

Worldwide Distribution of the Stylasteridae (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa)*

Stylasterids show a pronounced insular distribution pattern, being found primarily off small (less than 36,000 km-) oceanic islands, atolls, and archipelagos, and on seamounts and submarine ridges. Although lowered salinity and increased sedimentation may exclude stylasterids from the coasts of larger continental land masses, it is more likely that the availability of hard substrate and the low...

Phylogenetic Implications of Calcium Carbonate Mineralogy in the Stylasteridae (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa)

The carbonate mineralogy of the calcified hydrozoan family Stylasteridae is controlled largely by phylogenetic rather than environmental factors. In a comprehensive study— the first of its kind—of the mineralogy of almost an entire family of calcareous organisms, this finding is well documented. X-ray diffraction analyses of 24 of 25 genera indicate that the skeletons of most species analyzed (...

Stylasteridae (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa, Filifera) from South Africa.

We describe and figure the 20 species of stylasterid hydrozoans known from South Africa. These consist of seven new species, six range extensions, and seven species previously known from South African. Most of the specimens reported resulted from expeditions of the Pieter Faure (1898-1903) and Meiring Naude (1975-1987), and are deposited primarily in the South African Museum (Cape Town). A repl...

Revision of the Hawaiian Stylasteridae (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa: Athecata)

Four species of stylasterids are described from the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (Kure to Kaua‘i) at depths of 293–583 m, including three new species: Distichopora asulcata, Stylaster griggi, and S. infundibuliferus. In addition, specimens of Distichopora anceps were observed and collected, showing it to be the most common macroinvertebrate on the northwestern slope of Laysan Island but not kn...
